Many stigmatized people in wealthy countries are curious mixtures of entitlement and disadvantage. From a global perspective, the poor and disenfranchised in Canada, Belgium, or the United States are doing OK. That doesn’t mean prejudice and social inequality are acceptable, but it does shed a light on how we are all global citizens rather than just members of our own local cultures. The injustices in the United States are truly glaring, but they pale in comparison to some of the harshest injustices that exist across the globe.
As I’m sure you well know, there are plenty of nations where it is still a crime to love a person whose gender is the same as yours.
